Iceland is like somewhere I’ve never visited before, it was truly breathtaking.

We went in November, we arrived a day after a huge amount of snowfall and the landscape was beautiful.

All I wanted from this trip to see the beautiful geological formations Iceland had to offer and the golden circle is where we could find these spectacular sights. Yes, tours are easy and hassle-free, but I loved the freedom you get from driving yourself, stopping at as many view points you desire and hugging as many Icelandic horses you feel necessary.

Renting a car was easy, pre-book at the airport and pick it up when you arrive. in hindsight we should have booked a 4×4 as our Nissan micra, even with winter tyres, felt quite precarious in the snow storm conditions one evening.

We chose to stay in Reykjavik for one night, had dinner at Mikkeller and Friends – amazing pizza, lovely cosy interior. We then visited a bar called Bravo, with little window seat cushions, it was a welcome stop from the snowfall outside.

Iceland is expensive, but with it’s incredible outdoors, it’s worth it. We saved a few pennies by taking some food with us, pasta, beans, rice etc. and just buying fresh veg at the supermarkets.

After exploring the city, going to the top of the Hallgrimskirkja Cathedral – views were incredible, we did our first Icelandic drive to a little place about 20mins from Selfoss where we had rented an air bnb in the middle of nowhere (see photo above). I’m a big fan of air bnb, staying in local houses and flats feels so authentic and its often a lot cheaper than hotels. Ours was called Golden Circle Hideout in Hraunborgir, it was perfect and just what we wanted.

We were able to drive to the Strokkur, Kerið Crater lake, Gulfoss, the Silfra fissure, the Blue Lagoon and to  Sejalandafoss on our last day. We spent our evenings in our hot tub, with the natural hot springs, the water just comes up from the ground and wasn’t even too smelly.

Unfortunately we weren’t successful with the Northern Lights, but with a natural phenomenon, you’re not always lucky. We plan to go back next year to try again, and to also plan a trip to the Ice caves, Vik beach and to scuba dive the Silfra fissure.

Just go to Iceland, you won’t regret it and you can do a lot in just a few days.

Me and Callie
